Coarse Spaces over the Ages

چکیده

The objective of this paper is to explain the principles of the design of a coarse space in a simplified way and by pictures. The focus is on ideas rather than on a more historically complete presentation. That can be found, e.g., in [ 28]. Also, space limitation does not allow us even to mention many important methods and papers that should be rightfully included. The coarse space facilitates a global exchange of information in multigrid and domain decomposition methods for elliptic problems. This exchange is necessary, because the solution is non-local: its value at any point depends on the right-handside at any other point. Both multigrid and domain decomposition combine a global correction in the coarse space with local corrections, called smoothing in multigrid and subdomain solves in domain decomposition. In multigrid the coarse space is large (typically, the mesh ratio is 2 or 3 at most) and the local solvers are not very powerful (usually, relaxation). In domain decomposition, the coarse space is small (just one or a few degrees of freedom per subdomain), and the local solvers are powerful (direct solvers on subdomain). But the mathematics is more or less the same.

Varieties of coarse spaces

A class M of coarse spaces is called a variety if M is closed under formation of subspaces, coarse images and products. We classify the varieties of coarse spaces and, in particular, show that if a variety M contains an unbounded metric space then M is the variety of all coarse spaces.

Analysis of a Two-Scale, Locally Conservative Subgrid Upscaling for Elliptic Problems

We present a two-scale theoretical framework for approximating the solution of a second order elliptic problem. The elliptic coefficient is assumed to vary on a scale that can be resolved on a fine numerical grid, but limits on computational power require that computations be performed on a coarse grid. We consider the elliptic problem in mixed variational form over W × V ⊂ L2 × H(div). We base...

Effects of Architectural Components on the Satisfaction Rate of Residents with Different Ages and Genders in Relation to Privacy (Case Study: a Residential Complex in Tabriz)

The main objective of this paper is to assess the effects of architectural components on residential complex to achieve a desirable rate of privacy for the residents. Privacy is a process in which the transactions among individuals can be adjus‌ted by means of providing a suitable relationship between people and their built environment. In addition, since the transaction between the behavior o...

The Keel–mori Theorem via Stacks

Let X be an Artin stack (always assumed to have quasi-compact and separated diagonal over SpecZ; cf. [2, §1.3]). A coarse moduli space for X is a map π : X → X to an algebraic space such that (i) π is initial among maps from X to algebraic spaces (note that the category of maps from X to an algebraic space is discrete), and (ii) for every algebraically closed field k the map [X (k)]→ X(k) is bi...

Coarse Embeddability Into

The main purposes of this paper are (1) To survey the area of coarse embeddability of metric spaces into Banach spaces, and, in particular, coarse embeddability of different Banach spaces into each other; (2) To present new results on the problems: (a) Whether coarse non-embeddability into l2 implies presence of expander-like structures? (b) To what extent l2 is the most difficult space to embe...
